What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural biological process whereby your periods stop due to a decline in oestrogen levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55 but can happen earlier or later. Perimenopause is when you have the symptoms of menopause, but your periods have not fully stopped yet. Perimenopause ends and menopause begins when you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months. This affects not just mood, energy, and sleep – but also the skin.
Why does skin change during menopause?
Oestrogen plays a vital role in maintaining youthful, healthy skin. As hormone levels drop, you may notice:
- Loss of collagen and elastin, causing sagging and fine lines
- Dryness and dehydration, due to reduced oil production
- Thinner, more fragile skin, with slower healing
- Increased sensitivity or dullness
These changes are completely normal – but they can feel frustrating. The good news is you can support your skin’s health and resilience during this time.
Options to support your skin during Perimenopause/Menopause
Daily skincare:
Because of all the skin changes, a “one-size-fits-all” skincare regimen from your 30s might start to feel inadequate. You’ll want to lean into more hydrating, barrier-supporting, antioxidant and gentle active formulations — without being overly aggressive or stripping.
Medical-grade brands like Obagi are particularly well suited at this life stage, because they tend to formulate with higher potency actives, better liposomal delivery, and more support for skin repair vs just surface treatments.
Menopause is a phase of transformation — your skin doesn’t have to feel like it’s being left behind. With a wisely selected regimen, emphasising hydration, barrier care, antioxidants, and judicious use of actives, you can help your skin adapt, look more radiant, and age more gracefully
Why do we recommend OBAGI?
- Clinically strong formulations — Obagi’s medical/dermatologist-grade lines allow for higher efficacy in fewer steps.
- Comprehensive systems — Obagi offers full kits so your products “talk” to each other.
- Barrier support options — Many Obagi formulas are relatively gentle, and the Hydrate line is specifically intended to restore moisture, you can also include Rebalance to restore the skin barrier.
- Reputation & dermatologist trust — Obagi has been used in medical skin programs, helping with pigmentation, texture, collagen, etc

Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides HPT®️ (Highly Purified Technology) is an advanced regenerative treatment designed to repair and rejuvenate ageing or hormonally affected skin at a cellular level. They are fragments of natural DNA derived from trout, known for their powerful ability to:
- Stimulate fibroblasts, increasing collagen and elastin production
- Enhances the skin’s natural ability to attract and retain water, leading to a plumper, more dewy appearance.
- Encourage cell regeneration and wound healing
They also have additional benefits including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. By working beneath the surface, Plinest Polynucleotides HPT®️ helps restore vitality, density, and glow – making it a perfect solution for menopausal and peri-menopausal skin.
Laser facials
Non-Ablative laser facials such as Clearlift and Clearskin Pro can help boost volume, collagen production and help smooth out the skins surface. These lasers have zero downtime so are better for mature skin as there’s no surface healing required. If you have also noticed more pigmentation and sun damage coming through during this stage, we also have a range of IPL lasers which can support reduction of this.
Red light therapy
Red light therapy uses low-wavelength light (usually 630–700 nm) and near-infrared light (800–850 nm) to penetrate the skin at different depths.
Unlike UV light, it does not cause damage or tanning — it stimulates your cells’ mitochondria to produce more energy (ATP).
Think of it as a “recharge” for sluggish menopausal cells.
| How Red Light Therapy Helps | Supporting Mechanism |
Dryness & Loss of Firmness | Boosts collagen and elastin synthesis | Increases fibroblast activity and microcirculation |
Fine Lines & Wrinkles | Improves texture and tone | Stimulates skin repair and reduces oxidative stress |
Redness / Sensitivity | Calms inflammation and barrier disruption | Balances cytokine activity |
Thinning Skin | Promotes cellular regeneration | Enhances keratinocyte turnover |
Mood & Sleep Changes | May improve serotonin and circadian balance | Light exposure affects melatonin regulation |
Joint & Muscle Discomfort | Reduces inflammation and pain | Improves local blood flow and tissue recovery |
