Lymphatic Massage FAQs
Why would I need a lymphatic drainage massage?
If you are suffering with bloating or excess fluid (water retention), in areas of the body such as the legs, your lymphatic system may not be working as effectively as it should. This can be caused by many reasons such as diet, lifestyle, medications or other medical reasons. A lymph drainage massage such as the Boa Max, is designed to follow the Dr Vodder method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) which aids to assist lymph flow and aid in drainage of the tissues.
What is the Boa Max System and how does it work?
The Boa Max device is a medical lymphatic drainage suit which provides a highly effective treatment by following the Dr Vodder method of lymphatic drainage. The suit has 24 pneumatic pipes connecting to inflate the garment and works by facilitating sequential pressure for upward lymph and blood movement. The benefits of the suit is you get a full massage on both sides of the body for up to 60 minutes, whereas a therapist will work each side of the body separately, in the 60 minute massage.
Do I need to do anything before or after the treatment?
We recommend drinking plenty of water before and after the treatment to help you stay hydrated and flush through the toxins.
It is also advisable to not eat too much before your appointment, avoid heavy meals 2 hours prior to your appointment.
What should I wear for the treatment?
For Boa Max - we recommend loose comfortable clothing; nothing that will restrict blood flow (ie tight gym leggings).
For both MLD and Brazilian MLD oil is normally applied in the session so clothing that is comfortable to put on after this is advised.
Is the treatment uncomfortable?
The Boa Max lymphatic drainage treatment is carried out at a pressure that's comfortable throughout. Your therapist can adjust this for you during the treatment.
MLD is a really gentle technique so won't feel like a normal massage.
Brazilian MLD uses strokes to aid sculpting.
Can I have a sports massage with Boa Max?
Yes, the Boa Max actually has a variety of programmes including Lymphatic Drainage, Cellulite reduction, Post Surgery Drainage and Sports Massage. All of the programmes operate at different pressures to suit the outcome.
The Sports Massage programme operates at a slightly higher pressure to help relieve tension in the muscles.
How many treatments do I need?
Depending on the outcome you are looking to achieve will determine your personalised programme. Your therapist will be able to guide you depending on your goals.
Ive just had surgery, do I need clearance from my surgeon for Lymphatic Massage?
We do advise having medical clearance if you have just had surgery to ensure this treatment is right for you. Many surgeons would suggest frequency and timings of the treatment so please share this advice in your consultation.
What is the difference between MLD and Brazilian MLD?
Traditional MLD is a very gentle massage technique aimed at treating issues like lymphedema, chronic swelling and for post surgical recovery.
Brazilian MLD became popular in Brazil for its added aesthetic effects know to help contour and sculpt the body. Typically used for post cosmetic surgery, cellulite reduction and prior to events or holidays.
