What is the lymphatic system and why is it important?
The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections. Lymphatic vessels, tissues, organs, and glands work together to drain a watery fluid called lymph from throughout the body.
Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no pump to push fluid under pressure and just relies on muscle contractions and general movement to keep the fluid moving.
When should you consider a lymphatic drainage massage?
The Lymphatic system can sometimes become blocked due to various reasons including illness, cancer treatment (surgery/radiation), infection, and trauma. Other causes include venous diseases that overwhelm the lymph system, congenital conditions affecting lymph vessel development, obesity, and tumours.
A build-up of fluid can cause swelling in certain areas of the body, so sometimes interventions are needed to reduce this.
Lymphatic Massage is a light-pressured massage using several techniques to gently move fluid in the common areas of build-up, out through the lymph nodes.
How often would you need a Lymphatic Massage?
Depending on your reasons for treatment, a one-off massage may be enough to stimulate your system and help remove any build-up of toxins.
If you are recovering from surgery or illness, you may need more regular treatments taken a few times a week.
What's the difference between Lymphatic Drainage Suits (Boa Max) and a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Treatment?
The Boa Max Lymphatic suit applies sequential pressure to move lymph fluid and delivers a consistent and uniform treatment that can also reach difficult areas. Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage uses light, rhythmic hand movements from a trained therapist for a more personalized and hands-on approach. Both methods have similar therapeutic outcomes like a reduction in swelling and promoting detoxification but differ in their delivery method and the personalised adjustments a human therapist can add.
Which treatment should I choose?
If you are suffering with fluid build-up in all areas of your body or equal on both sides of the body, the lymphatic drainage suit can deliver a consistent treatment and saves times as it delivers to both sides of your body in one go. You can choose between lower body or upper body garments. The lower body garment will complete drainage up to your chest and covers your left arm, whereas the upper body garment will cover the tummy upwards and include both arms. You can do both garments one after the other (please allow 2 hours for this).
If you have very localised swelling and would like a specific area to be targeted a manual therapist led massage may suit you better.
How long is the treatment?
The Boa Max system will take between 45-55 minutes to complete a full cycle of massage (per garment type), a manual lymphatic drainage massage will be approximately an hour.
